One thing Wynne Roman does well is peeling back her characters insecurities and exposing them to her audience. With glaring flaws her portrayals become accessible in their humanity to anyone who has a heart. Wycked Redemption, book six in the Wycked Obsession series, is bassist Zayne Prescott's story and addiction is his cross to bear or savior depending on how you look at it. With the burden of a destructive and cruel past drugs shielded him from its harshness even while they little by little destroyed his soul.
Zayne's battle with his demons throughout this series has been one of blatant debauchery and his dangerous descent was destructive, bordering on irreparable. His dark spiral as he sought escape from his pain was brutal to watch play out. The collateral damage to the ones he loved was vast but never came near the despair and raw pain he inflicted on himself. Readers might hate what he did but it was nearly impossible to walk away from this character without feeling his suffering and feeling infinite amounts of sympathy. The love and concern of his friends reinforced that he was worth fighting for even as he sunk deeper into his darkness making his journey all the more heartbreaking.
Grace was a portrayal riddled in contradictions, on one hand she could be incredibly strong and by the next page she could be crippled by her lack of self worth. There was no playing the victim in her behavior, it was a genuine struggle that taunted her and put up a barrier to her moving forward in life. Ultimately it was her acute sensitivity and perception that brought her to a genuine love and exposed her backbone of steel that surprised even her.
Zayne and Grace were complex portrayals that required intensive research and exposure to harsh light showing the darker sides of their psyches. Both of these characters were far from perfect and that is what made them incredibly interesting as they shattered rose tinted glasses and held mirrors up to their faces questioning their own choices and self worth. Their attraction and compassion toward each other complimented their issues and gave each of them someone capable of breaking through the barrier of their personal struggles. When they each had breakthroughs they were powerful events because their experiences were handled so vividly by this author.
Wynne Roman consistently brings exceptional characters to her audience. This author does not hide the ugly but wears her creations scars with gentleness under harsh scrutiny. With an absorbing writing style that easily pulls readers in, Ms. Roman is an author whose works are intense, powerful and all around wonderfully put together. Wycked Redemption shows the hope at the end of a dark path paved with Wynne Roman's insight and fabulous storytelling!

*While part of a series this book can be read as a stand-alone. Reading the previous books in this series, while not required, would enhance readers overall experience.*
