Cassandra Robbins spins off her Disciples series for a captivating start in book one, Rise, of her Rock God series.
Rhys Granger was the guy that Gia Fontaine had always loved yet it was not an easy love and the road to a HEA with this pair was filled with considerable obstacles. Ultimately a significant age gap kept Gia's unrequited crush on Rhys in check until the gap narrowed and the attraction combusted. This was no superficial interest or casual fling that this pair shared. Their interactions were littered with history including the fact that Rhys' was best friends with Gia's older brother who was not in favor of them being in a relationship. This was an agonizing love that faced so many stumbling blocks it was impossible not to feel the pain and frustration of these portrayals. Both Rhys and Gia's lack of communication and miscommunications fueled their torment and in the end this played as big a part in this couple's separations as outside influences. Some people are meant to be together and it was apparent this was true of this pair but not without them putting up a good fight and doing everything in their power to sabotage their fated love.
Rhys took on the role of the rock and roll bad boy with ease. The wild side of his rock and roll lifestyle was not shown with rose tinted glasses but as a more destructive lifestyle where limits were pushed and often brought out the less than flattering side of the characters in this work. His path without a grounding force was taking its toll on him and those around him physically and mentally. Gia took her initial attempt at a relationship with Rhys as a cautionary tale for going forward. Tough and surrounded by defense mechanisms to protect her wounded heart Gia was a force to be reckoned with. Theirs was an inescapable draw. Both knew the allure of a true passion as their art drove them but it was their love for each other that was meant to sustain them and give them longevity in the paths they chose. Ms. Robbins did a great job of showing this couple's conflict in all its forms.
Cassandra Robbins is a writer easy to get caught up in. Her works are high on the emotion but she accompanies it with storylines that are intriguing and give the emotion somewhere to play out for amazing reading experiences. Edgy is where this author thrives and imperfect characters shine in her writing. Rise was full of all the great stuff that makes a Cassandra Robbins story what readers keep coming back to!
